Foreword Reviews recently announced the winners of the 2022 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards. These awards recognize outstanding books from independent and university presses, as well as self-published books. Matt Sutherland, Foreword Reviews‘s Executive Editor, said the following glowing words about this year’s competition: “What a monumental and exciting effort the judging process was this year. So many worthy titles, so thin the margins between medal winners and finalists.” We are excited to announce that, among this pool of fantastic books, four books from Notre Dame Press were chosen to receive top honors!

2022 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards: You Are Gods

You Are Gods: On Nature and Supernature by David Bentley Hart

• Gold Medal, Religion •

“As you might expect, if you have read even a single paragraph of Hart’s previous writing, the essays in this collection are erudite and trenchant, and full of surprises.” —Church Times

2022 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards: More Precious Than Peace

More Precious than Peace: A New History of America in World War I by Justus D. Doenecke

• Gold Medal, War & Military •

“The congressional and public debates that Doenecke helpfully describes make the book a nice addition to the World War I literature and a valuable reminder of the people’s war at home.” —H-Net

2022 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards: Bad Mothers, Bad Daughters

Bad Mothers, Bad Daughters by Maya Sonenberg

• Silver Medal, Short Stories •

“Sonenberg subverts the expected rhythm of short stories. Instead of focusing on plot, she focuses on meaning, with infallibly chosen details that reach past the brain and into the soul. . . . The short stories of Bad Mothers, Bad Daughters are written with such beauty and empathy that each conjures a heartfelt sigh.” —Foreword Reviews (Starred Review)

2022 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards: Future Peace

Future Peace: Technology, Aggression, and the Rush to War by Robert H. Latiff

• Bronze Medal, Science & Technology •

“Latiff suggests that national militaries build machines they do not and cannot entirely understand and whose behavior they may not be able to predict within the complex interactions comprising modern warfare. . . . Anyone interested in national and international security should read this book, from citizen scholars to politicians to specialists in military affairs.” —Choice
