This year, Notre Dame’s Kellogg Institute for International Studies celebrates its 40th anniversary. Founded in 1982 thanks to a generous donation from Helen Kellogg, the Institute brings together an interdisciplinary community of scholars to promote research and education in the areas of democracy and human development.

In the pursuit of its mission, the Kellogg Institute has been a long-time partner of the University of Notre Dame Press. In 1985, just three years after Kellogg’s founding, Notre Dame Press launched its Kellogg Institute Series on Democracy and Development. This series includes 81 titles focused not only on democracy and human development, but also on other themes in international studies, such as religion and human rights.

The award-winning books in the Kellogg Institute Series have long played a critical role in shaping their fields. Amber R. Reed’s Nostalgia after Apartheid: Disillusionment, Youth, and Democracy in South Africa (November 2020) won the 2021 Margaret Mead Award, sponsored by American Anthropological Association and Society for Applied Anthropology. Ignacio Walker’s Democracy in Latin America: Between Hope and Despair (April 2013) received praise in Foreign Affairs.

“We are proud to celebrate forty years of Kellogg’s service to academic research and education,” commented Steve Wrinn, Director of Notre Dame Press. “We look forward to continuing our close collaboration with this prominent Institute and fostering the ongoing success of our joint series.”

In the coming months, Notre Dame Press will be publishing two more titles in the Kellogg Institute Series on Democracy and Development: Making a Modern Political Order: The Problem of the Nation State by James J. Sheehan (May 2023) and Integral Human Development: Catholic Social Teaching and the Capability Approach, edited by Séverine Deneulin and Clemens Sedmak (August 2023).
