In partnership with the Kellogg Institute for International Studies, the University of Notre Dame Press is proud to announce the publication of two new titles in the Kellogg Institute Series on Democracy and Development: Politics and the Pink Tide: A Comparative Analysis of Protest in Latin America by Kathleen Bruhn, professor in and the chair of the Department of Political Science at University of California, Santa Barbara, and Democratic Quality in Southern Europe: France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain edited by Tiago Fernandes, associate professor of political science at the University Institute of Lisbon and head of the Varieties of Democracy Regional Center for Southern Europe.
Politics and the Pink Tide uses individual and event-level data from Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Venezuela, and Ecuador to show how economic policy choices and the links between leftist parties and social movements affect patterns of protest. Françoise Montambeault, co-editor of Legacies of the Left Turn in Latin America, declares this book a “very important contribution to Latin American studies, to comparative politics, and to social movement theories, both theoretically and empirically.”
Fueled by new data from the Varieties of Democracy project, Democratic Quality in Southern Europe takes a close look at the democratic trajectories of France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain over the past fifty years. “Blending historical perspective with mountains of empirical evidence, this collection is a ‘must-read’ for anyone who seeks to understand the varieties of democracy in Southern Europe,” says Nancy Bermeo, co-editor of Mass Politics in Tough Times.
