The University of Notre Dame Press is proud to announce that two of its recently published books have received national recognition: Afro-Atlantic Catholics: America’s First Black Christians by Jeroen Dewulf was awarded the 2023 John Gilmary Shea Prize by the American Catholic Historical Association (ACHA), and Aristotle’s Discovery of the Human: Piety and Politics in the “Nicomachean Ethics” by Mary P. Nichols was named one of Choice’s 2023 Outstanding Academic Titles.

Afro-Atlantic Catholics: America’s First Black Christians examines the influence of African Catholics on the historical development of Black Christianity in America during the seventeenth century. Author Jeroen Dewulf is director of the Center for Portuguese Studies and professor in the Department of German and Dutch Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He has written multiple books, including The Pinkster King and the King of Kongo: The Forgotten History of America’s Dutch-Owned Slaves and From the Kingdom of Kongo to Congo Square: Kongo Dances and the Origins of the Mardi Gras Indians. The highly competitive John Gilmary Shea Prize recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of American Catholic history. Established in 1945, this prize is one of the highest honors bestowed by the American Catholic Historical Association. Afro-Atlantic Catholics has also received critical praise from American Catholic Studies Newsletter, Black Catholic Messenger, Church History (which named it a Book of the Month feature), The Americas, and New West Indian Guide, among others.

Aristotle’s Discovery of the Human: Piety and Politics in the “Nicomachean Ethics” offers a fresh, illuminating, and accessible analysis of one of the Western philosophical tradition’s most important texts. Author Mary P. Nichols is professor emerita in the Department of Political Science at Baylor University. She is the author of seven books, including Thucydides and the Pursuit of Freedom. The prestigious Choice Outstanding Academic Titles list reflects the best scholarly titles reviewed by Choice during the previous calendar year, as chosen by the editors. The 2023 list features 499 books from 109 publishers, selected from the thousands of titles that Choice received over the course of the calendar year. Choice is a publishing unit of the Association of College and Research Libraries, a division of the American Library Association.
