Tomáš Halík returns to Notre Dame Press with his new book, Touch the Wounds: On Suffering, Trust, and Transformation. One of the most important voices in contemporary Catholicism, Halík argues that Christians can discover the clearest vision of God not by turning away from suffering but by confronting it.
Global Initiatives of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew: Peace, Reconciliation, and Care for Creation, edited by John Chryssavgis, gathers together eleven important joint statements from Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the head of the Eastern Orthodox Church, addressing diverse topics from climate change to ecumenical dialogue. The book includes a foreword by John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., president of the University of Notre Dame.
Winner of the Ernest Sandeen Prize in Poetry, Vickie Vertiz’s Auto/Body connects the vulnerability of the narrating queer body to the language of auto mechanics to reveal their shared decadence.
The Case for Parental Choice: God, Family, and Educational Liberty by John E. Coons, edited by Nicole Stelle Garnett, Richard W. Garnett, and Ernest Morrell is the first volume in the Catholic Schools and the Common Good series.
New to the Notre Dame Studies in African Theology series is The Theology of Mercy Amba Oduyoye: Ecumenism, Feminism, and Communal Practice by Oluwatomisin Olayinka Oredein. This work explores African theologian Mercy Amba Oduyoye’s initiative to include African women’s experiences within Christian theological discourse.
The Kellogg Institute Series on Democracy and Development series will include Making a Modern Political Order: The Problem of the Nation State by James J. Sheehan. The book argues that the modern political order arises out of people’s shared expectations and hopes, without which the nation state could not exist.
The Politics of Gender Reform in West Africa: Family, Religion, and the State by Ludovic Lado is part of the Contending Modernities series. This book examines the construction of African modernity through the implementation and reception of gender reform in the West African context.
The Collapse of Freedom of Expression: Reconstructing the Ancient Roots of Modern Liberty by Jordi Pujol is the newest book in the Catholic Ideas for a Secular World series. Pujol offers a holistic account of the problems posed by freedom of expression in our current times and offers corrective measures to allow for a more genuine exchange of ideas within the global society.
