In her new book, Meditations on the Life of Christ: The Short Italian Text, Sarah McNamer, associate professor of English and medieval studies at Georgetown University, translates and critically examines an essential medieval text of the same name. She was recognized for her work this January when she received the Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Publication Award for a Manuscript in Italian Literary Studies by the Modern Language Association. The award is presented to “an outstanding manuscript dealing with any aspect of the languages and literatures of Italy,” including translations like this one. McNamer’s thorough scholarship, linguistic analysis, textual annotations, and rich introduction illuminate the primacy and probable female authorship of the Italian version of the text, providing a significant and original contribution to scholarship on the Meditations on the Life of Christ.

The book, published by the University of Notre Dame Press, is part of the prestigious William and Katherine Devers Series in Dante and Medieval Italian Literature, edited by Zygmunt Barański, Theodore Cachey, and Christian Moevs, Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, University of Notre Dame. The series is dedicated to publishing modern scholarship on Dante and thirteenth- and fourteenth-century Italian literature that emphasizes the construction and understanding of cultural tradition.
